Gingrich Address to NFRA Convention
October 29, 2011
Des Moines, IowaTRANSCRIPT:
I'm Newt Gingrich and I want to thank you for allowing me to spend a few minutes with you at the National Federation of Republican Assemblies.
I can't imagine a more important election than 2012. I think it's the most important election since 1860.
And you have a key role to play in getting out the message of a strong conservatism to replace President Obama and the damage he's been doing to America.
As you know, President Obama has been the most successful food stamp president in American history. More Americans have lost their jobs and ended up on food stamps under President Obama than anyone in the history of that program. In fact, you have to go back to the Great Depression to see the level of economic damage that President Obama's been able to do to America through his class warfare and his commitment to bureaucratic socialism.
It is vital that we bring everyone in America the opportunity to have a paycheck instead of a food stamp, the opportunity to be part of a growing economy instead of a stagnant economy, the opportunity to apply the right principles to balance the budget, return power back home, enforce the tenth amendment, and do the things we need to do to get America back on the right track.
As you know, that means winning the argument, that means developing new and better solutions; and what you're doing, getting together, talking these things through, beginning to work on the key arguments for 2012, is very, very important.
This IS the most important election in our lifetimes. Let's take our country back, together: Click HERE to Join NFRA Now
We're not going to beat President Obama with money: he's going to use the power of the White House to raise over a billion dollars. Which tells you how much trouble he's in, because he knows in a fair fight, he would just get wiped out.
So he's just going to try to buy the election. But we can do better.
Volunteers can beat money. Activists can beat Wall Street donors. And the fact is, you and I, working together, can carry the argument to the American people.
But I want to go a step further. As your nominee, I will challenge President Obama to seven Lincoln-Douglas style three-hour debates with a time-keeper but no moderator. In fact, to give him a fair chance he can use—if he wants to—he can go ahead and use a teleprompter. Because, after all, if you had to defend Obamacare in a three hour debate wouldn't you want something to help you through it?
But the fact is, ultimately, he's going to agree to debate, and the reason is simple: I don't believe he can run and hide. The damage he's done to the American economy, the number of Americans who are unemployed because of his policies, the amount of debt he's piled up on our children and grandchildren: he has a lot to answer for.
With your help, I'm going to make sure that he does get a chance to answer for it. With your help we're gonna carry these issues to every American in every neighborhood. And I believe together that we can win one of the greatest victories in American history.
So I look forward very much to working with you, I hope you have a great meeting, and I hope you'll get totally involved in getting America back on the right track again.

The NFRA fights tirelessly to elect a strong, grassroots Republican Party leadership. The more they succeed, the more we’ll see real change in America.
As a famous Californian once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” That’s why, now more than ever, the National Federation of Republican Assemblies is looked upon as one of the preeminent guardians of Ronald Reagan’s legacy, providing a powerful, unwavering voice for conservative principles amid the pandemonium of modern politics. Their advocacy is vital to our party’s future.
When conservatives took back America’s largest Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, from the liberal leadership which had hijacked it, we used the same strategies and tactics that make the NFRA so potent a force today. Those strategies worked flawlessly then, and they’ll work as conservatives assert themselves in the Republican Party today.
The Republican Assemblies are truly a force for renewal within the Republican Party.
I am honored to stand with the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, one of the strongest voices for conservative values and a revitalized Republican Party in America.
The NFRA has never been more important than it is right now. We no longer have the luxury to nominate Republicans who, once elected, undermine the principles of individual freedom and limited government that define our party. Republican Assemblies across the country have kept the conservative movement alive and the future of our party and of our country ultimately depends on their success.
When I was a high school student, Phyllis Schlafly’s book, A Choice, Not an Echo, was an important influence on my political direction. Today I support the NFRA for that same reason. The Republican Party must be more than just a cheaper, slower echo of the Democrats: it must be a distinct choice, for conservative values and for a future of freedom. If you long for that choice, then you should join the NFRA.
We need more people like you [the Republican Assemblies] who truly believe in the Constitution, in liberty and in standing up to an establishment that believes in neither.
